Throughout my entire time in high school, hockey has been a consistent factor of my life. From playing recreationally in 9th grade to joining a travel team and playing at a higher level, to becoming a major part of my job, hockey is my pride and joy.   As I read the varsity roster posted for the summer, I realized my name wasn't on the list. I knew I had to make varsity in order to keep playing for my high school’s hockey team, since I was going into my junior year. I was shocked and didn’t know what to do, so I went back to the locker room and got undressed and went home. The only option left for me to play hockey that summer was to join the team of my high school’s rival.
Since I started to play hockey, I have improved in all facets of the sport, be it physical abilities like stick handling, shooting, body contact, or mental abilities like teamwork, leadership, or decision making. Being able to play at a competitive level nationally, as well as represent my high school at the varsity level both have helped me gain and develop these skills.   When I first walked into the locker room that summer, I was met with confused faces until I said my name and started talking to people. I immediately had an air of doubt surrounding me, because I was the “reject” from the school across town. In the first game, I turned that doubt into acceptance, as I played physically and set up two teammates for goals. Throughout the rest of the summer, I scheduled extra ice time to improve my skating, eventually scoring the game-winning goal against the top team in our division, as well as putting up two assists against my own high school in our rivalry game.
I’m proud of it mostly because it has always been a reflection of the best qualities of myself. Hockey forces one to be focused, hardworking, and communicative, all of which are things I strive to be and hockey has not only forced those values out of me during the game, but it has trained me to continue having them in the rest of my life outside of hockey.   At the end of summer, I walked back into tryouts for my high school. All my work ended up paying off, as I made the team and ended that season with 13 points, the most on the team. The season that followed taught me that setbacks are temporary and the important thing is to focus on how one can improve. I’m proud that when I got cut I didn’t let it shape me and instead worked to earn my place.
One time when I used those skills was the 2026 spring UTD Battle of the Brains CS competition, where after reading and dissecting all the competition problems, I had to decide what problems to assign to which team members. I had to use my leadership skills to designate problems, and my teamwork and decision making skills to pick who would be best at solving each problem.
On top of that, in my time playing hockey, I’ve improved significantly, going from someone new to hockey playing in rec league to a top line hockey player on a travel team, one of my biggest accomplishments during high school.
